RTÉ News has reported that a major patient recall and review of bowel screening cases at Wexford General Hospital has identified around 12 missed cancers, including the probable avoidable death of one male patient.
Approximately 600 patients were recalled after it was discovered that two patients in 2014 had been diagnosed with cancer between screening examinations. The patients in question had undergone screening colonoscopies and diagnostic colonoscopies.
Concerns about the quality of these screenings had been raised by a consultant.
The Ireland East Hospital Group stated today that the subsequent report into the events is in its final stages, and that it will be sent to all referenced parties before being published.
