TK Maxx is an American department store chain that sells well-known clothing brands at discounted prices. In the United States, the company operates under the name TJ Maxx.
TK Maxx opened on Paul Quay in Wexford Town on Thursday, 11 June 2015.
The store’s arrival was anticipated for more than a year before it opened. Many welcomed the proposed opening of the retailer, believing it could inject life into the southern end of Wexford’s main street. The store was expected to create 40 new jobs for the town.
South Main Street had suffered economically since the onset of the recession. Supermarket giant Tesco moved to Distillery Road in 2007, and the Irish economic downturn began to impact small businesses from 2008 onward. These conditions led to the closure of Lowney’s Mall and several small traders in the area. Many local retailers hoped that TK Maxx would draw more shoppers to the area.
In March 2014, local newspapers reported that TK Maxx planned to move into a 2,505-square-metre retail unit in the Stonebridge development on Paul Quay. The retailer had submitted its planning application to the Borough Council, and the store was expected to open in July 2014.
In summer 2014, a local Bullring-based businessman, Nigel Hamilton, cast the opening of TK Maxx into doubt when he objected to the store’s location on Paul Quay. Hamilton, who owns the shop W.R. Hamilton & Son, claimed that the Stonebridge development would take business away from Wexford’s main street. He argued that the retailer should open a store on the main street, where increased footfall would benefit other shops.
In September 2014, An Bord Pleanála rejected Hamilton’s objection, stating that it did not believe TK Maxx’s location would negatively impact the vibrancy of the town centre.
In October 2014, the retailer agreed rental terms for the Stonebridge retail unit, which had been vacant since its construction near the end of the Celtic Tiger period.
In March 2015, the store began its recruitment drive, attracting dozens of job applications.
On Thursday, 11 June 2015, TK Maxx opened on Paul Quay. Shoppers who attended the opening in swimwear received a €50 voucher from the retailer. Wexford GAA player Lee Chin and fashion expert Cathy O’Connor officially opened the store.
The store receives daily deliveries of recognisable clothing brands, with up to 10,000 items arriving each week.
