Wygram

Wygram is a historical area in the north of Wexford Town, close to Hill Street, John Street, Davitt Road, and Belvedere Road. The busy Newtown Road (R769) runs through Wygram, connecting the outer “ring road” with the town centre.

The area was previously known as Breen’s Lane.

Its present-day name comes from the Wygram family, who once owned an estate in the area. On the site of that estate, an apartment building now sits behind old-fashioned railings. During the mid-1800s, this building was a maternity hospital, known at the time as a “lay in” or “lying-in” hospital.

It was erected in memory of Major Charles Vallotton, a British soldier who was killed in the area in 1793 during an event called “The First Rebellion.” The First Rebellion was an altercation that occurred between Irish rebels and military forces that were stationed in the town. Over a dozen people were killed during the violence, including rebel leader John Moore and Major Charles Vallotton.

The former Tate School/Wexford Corporation building overlooks the area. This striking red-brick building was built by Wexford-born plantation owner William Tate in the early 1800s.

It began as a charity school. After Wexford Corporation moved in, it became known as the municipal buildings.

Today, it is Wexford Courthouse, which opened in 2018 following extensive renovations and extension.

On a number of maps, the area is labelled Monument Place, presumably after the Vallotton Monument.

In old black and white photographs of Wygram, a horse trough stands beside the stone monument.

In July 2015, the Wygram Nursing Home opened in the area. Its entrance is on Davitt Road North.
