There was a sense of sadness yesterday when one of Wexford’s most-beloved cafes closed its doors for the last time.
The Star Bakery, which has existed on Wexford’s South Main Street for a number of decades, closed its doors on Easter Saturday after its owner Marie Doyle made the decision to retire.
As it stands, Marie has not decided what to do with the premises.
On Facebook, people were quick to express their sadness at the closure:
Madeleine Quirke:
Thank you for all the wonderful treats over the years!
Snip It Barbershop:
We’ll miss the fresh scones in the mornings. Best of luck for the future to all of the staff at The Star.
Eleanor Harpur summed up most people’s sentiments:
The Star holds very fond memories for many of us in Wexford. I can remember my Mother with her white box of cakes tied with twine. The smell inside the bakery was always so inviting. The “house cake” was always a treat. End of an era.
Christine McAleer:
Thanks to everyone that worked there. I spent years enjoying my tea and coffee and meeting friends there.
