Wexford Town – Census 2011 Facts

The Census of Ireland 2011 provides insights into the population of Wexford Town through an interactive map of the data.

Single

Lus Mor in Whiterock Hill and Cluain Dara showed the highest concentration of single people, both at 75%. A section of Clonard Village followed at 72%.

Married

Mulgannon and Hillcrest led in married residents with 55%.

Divorced

Wexford Town centre recorded the highest divorce rate at 9%, including the apartments at Key West, parts of North Main Street, parts of South Main Street, and Henrietta Street. This area also has the highest proportion of apartments in Wexford Town at 71%.

Widowed

The highest proportion of widowed residents was in parts of Maudlintown and the area around Rocklands at 23%.

Males

Upper George’s Street, Mount George, Abbey Street, and John’s Gate Street had the highest proportion of male residents at 58%.

Females

Spawell Road and Redmond Road recorded the highest share of female residents at 64%, with Priory Court close behind at 63%.

Elderly people

The highest concentration of residents aged 65 and over was in Parklands, parts of Hill Street, and parts of Spawell Road.

Population change

Between 2006 and 2011, the population around Wexford Town centre declined by 3-9%. In contrast, residential estates on the outskirts saw a population increase of 10%. The area around Barntown recorded a particularly large increase of 21%.

Irish nationals

Melrose Court and Abbey Court on George’s Street had the lowest share of Irish nationals at 45%.

Religion

The Estuary and Redmond Cove recorded the lowest proportion of Catholics at 58%. This area also contained the highest percentage of residents who selected “No Religion” on the census form at 20%.

Family size (6+ persons)

Ferndale Park had the highest proportion of families with six or more persons at 13%. Wolfe Tone Villas and Whitemill Road followed at 10%.

Deprivation

According to the 2011 Census, the most deprived areas in Wexford were Hantoon Road, Antelope Road, and Harbour View. This area also contained the highest percentage of unskilled workers at 19%.

Lone mothers

The highest rate of lone mothers was in Ferndale Park at 32%.

Oldest houses

64% of houses on Carrigeen Street, Thomas Street, and parts of Grogan’s Road were built before 1919. School Street, High Street, and Mary Street followed at 58%.

Owner-occupied houses

Corish Park and Whiterock View showed the highest rate of owner-occupied housing at 88%.

Melrose Court, Abbey Court, Key West, North Main Street, and South Main Street recorded the lowest share at 14%.

Professionals

Mulgannon and Hillcrest had the highest concentration of professional workers at 14%.

Skilled manual workers

Parts of Shannon Court and Ferndale Park led in skilled manual workers with 25%.

Unskilled workers

The highest share of unskilled workers was in Hantoon Road, Antelope Road, Harbour View, Whitemill Road, and Wolfe Tone Villas at 19%.

Health

74% of residents in Cluain Dara rated their health as “Very Good,” followed by parts of Mount Prospect and Heathfield at 70%.

In contrast, only 34% of people on Lower John Street, Thomas Clarke Place, and Francis Street rated their health as “Very Good.”

“No car.”

The highest percentage of households with no car was recorded in Lower George’s Street, Skeffington Street, Well Lane, Monck Street, and parts of North Main Street at 77%.

Internet access

58% of households on Lower John Street, Thomas Clarke Place, and Francis Street had no Internet access. Monck Street, Skeffington Street, and Lower George’s Street followed closely at 57%. In contrast, only 6% of households in estates such as Whiterock Heights, Ard Na Cuan, and Ard Uisce had no Internet access.
