Weather forecasters are warning that severe thunderstorms will hit the South East of Ireland from midnight onwards.

According to Irish Weather Online, there is an 80% chance that the south east will see intense lightning, as well as torrential downpours and the possibility of hail.

Flash flooding in urban areas is also a possibility, with forecasters saying that the region could see up to 50mm of rain.

This morning, Dr. Klara Finkele from Met Eireann stated that a tropical air mass located over the north of Spain could reach the south coast of Ireland, causing intense bursts of rainfall.

People in the region are being advised to bring in loose garden furniture, as strong gusts of wind are also to be expected.
