A Polish national was arrested at Rosslare Europort, Wexford, after he was caught carrying up to €40,000 in cash.
The man, who is in his 30s, was stopped after a Revenue sniffer dog drew attention to him and his luggage.
The cash was seized in accordance with the Criminal Justice Act 1994, as amended by the Proceeds of Crime Act of 2005, which empowers officials to seize assets suspected to be proceeds of crime.
A three-month detention order was granted to allow an investigation into whether the money was the proceeds of crime.
