1798 Street

1798 Street is a relatively new street in the centre of Wexford Town. It runs from Spawell Road to Redmond Road. The street takes its name from the 1798 Rebellion, in which County Wexford featured prominently.

Until recent years, the banks on either side of the street had become overgrown, attracting anti-social behaviour. Since then, the Wexford Tidy Towns Committee and Wexford County Council have removed wild shrubbery, tidied the area, and planted flower beds.

The street opened around 1998, during the bicentenary of the 1798 Rebellion. Before that, it was a residential area. Nineteenth-century maps record the area as Fort View. It once overlooked the banks of the River Slaney before land reclamation projects were undertaken.
