New Ross native Aidan Leacy (56) has had his prison sentence reduced from six years to three years. The former public servant, who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two young girls, will now serve three years in prison, followed by two years of post-release supervision.
Leacy was sentenced to six years in prison back in 2013 after it emerged that he had sexually assaulted two seven-year-old girls. The court heard that the 56-year-old New Ross native had exposed himself to the girls and that he had introduced them to adult pornography. The court also heard that Leacy had encouraged the girls in question to pull down his trousers.
After his conviction, Leacy’s house was the subject of two arson attacks, which forced him to move to Wexford Town. Leacy’s legal representative, Thomas Creed SC, said that his client had been ‘effectively burnt out of his house.’ He also stated that Leacy had ‘lost his job and that his children were taken away from him and his wife as a direct result of this offence.’
The Court of Appeal has concluded that Leacy’s sentence was out-of-touch with sentences that have been handed down for similar offences. In response, the court has replaced Leacy’s six year sentence with a three year sentence, followed by a period of post-release supervision.
