Heatons was situated at 56-60 South Main Street in Wexford Town. The department store sold housewares, drapery, sporting goods, and clothing.
Before Heatons, the building housed Coffey’s, a long-established department store run by Ray Coffey. Founded in the late 19th century, it was a traditional Irish store where customers could purchase school clothes and shoes on credit, taking items home and paying later. Coffey’s outfitted many children in Wexford Town.
It closed in 2001. By October of that year, local newspapers reported that Heatons was close to purchasing the property.
After the sale, Heatons spent approximately €6 million refurbishing the building and adding a lift. The store opened on Saturday 24 May 2003.
Sports Direct’s parent company purchased the Heatons chain in March 2016. It gradually converted all Heatons’ properties into Sports Direct stores in the following years.
In May 2018, the Wexford store announced it was closing. After a closing down sale, it rebranded as Sports Direct.
