According to The Sunday Business Post, Wexford General Hospital is one of nine hospitals that will have its trauma services shut down under new plans being drawn up for the HSE.
If the plans are implemented, Wexford General Hospital will no longer be able to treat patients that have been in serious life-threatening accidents such as car crashes. It is believed that minor injuries will still be treated.
The proposal to remove trauma services at Wexford is expected to be made in a report by the Trauma Steering Group, which is currently developing a new national policy for trauma care in Ireland.
Trauma services at Naas, Cavan, Portiuncula, Mullingar, St. Luke’s, South Tipperary, Mercy University Hospital (Cork) and Portlaoise are also expected to be named in the report.
Wexford residents have reacted to the news with anger – with a Facebook Page being setup to oppose the plans.
